Jason Haun – Foreman
Upgrading the infrastructure of a medical facility is always a major project, but when that facility is the VA Medical Center, the stakes are even higher.
At Kidwell, we understood the importance of this project and the challenges it would present.
Our mission was to add a new service with two UPS systems and a generator to back up all the new data closets being built.
With two power sources in every closet, we ensured there would be a fail-safe in case one were to falter.
As a foreman on this project, I was responsible for planning, layout, material ordering, and coordinating access to all areas of the hospital.
But this was no ordinary construction job.
It required a level of precision, teamwork, and problem-solving that only a company like Kidwell could deliver.

Overcoming logistical challenges
One of the most significant challenges we faced was the limited space available to feed data rooms on all 14 floors.
This required us to get creative and come up with modifications to the design of the electrical system.
Bringing in a new service and feeding data rooms on multiple levels is no small feat, especially in an active hospital environment.
But the collaboration and communication among the Kidwell team were exceptional.
From the project manager to the team lead, and everyone working on site, we had a clear understanding of the scope of work and how it needed to be executed.
Working with the government added an extra layer of complexity.
Approval processes can be time-consuming, but as a company, we were proactive in pushing for expedited approvals.
We understood the importance of keeping the project on track and meeting the deadlines.
And by maintaining open lines of communication and leveraging our expertise, we were able to navigate these challenges efficiently.

Creative solutions to bureaucratic hurdles
In order to complete the project, we had to build many soffits for pathways due to the lack of ceiling space for the expansion of the data rooms.
This required innovative thinking and problem-solving skills from the entire team.
But we were up for the challenge.
By brainstorming ideas and working together, we devised solutions that allowed us to complete the scope of work within the constraints of the building.
Safety was always a top priority throughout the project.
Working in an active hospital environment requires extra precautions and adherence to strict safety protocols.
The Kidwell team consistently demonstrated their commitment to safety and followed our company values.
Their dedication to maintaining a safe working environment made our company shine in the eyes of the VA Medical Center and all stakeholders involved.

“At the end of the day, it’s about more than just upgrading infrastructure. It’s about making a difference in the lives of the veterans who rely on the VA Medical Center for their healthcare needs.”

The collaboration, problem-solving, and commitment to safety and quality craftsmanship that Kidwell brought to the table were instrumental in the successful completion of the project.
At the end of the day, it’s about more than just upgrading infrastructure.
It’s about making a difference in the lives of the veterans who rely on the VA Medical Center for their healthcare needs.
And that’s a responsibility we take seriously.
By putting our name on this project, we are proud to have contributed to the well-being and care of our veterans, and we look forward to continuing to work with the VA Medical Center and other clients who share our commitment to excellence.
More About The Project

Jerad M – Assistant Foreman
Jerad M, Assistant Foreman at Kidwell, is leading a small yet mighty team through a challenging VA hospital project, showcasing resilience and innovation. “We’re serving the people who served us, and it’s an honor to make this place better for our veterans,” Jerad proudly shares. With creative solutions like building soffits around pipe racks to overcome spatial constraints, Jerad’s team maintains a high standard of work. Apprentices Trevor R and Alex D have flourished under his mentorship, turning their inexperience into expertise that’s evident in the impressive conduit work throughout the hospital. “I’m proud of these guys and the work they’ve accomplished; they’re going to be great assets and future teachers,” Jerad says, reflecting his commitment to both the project’s mission and his team’s growth.

Justin D – Project Manager
As the Project Manager overseeing the intricate remodel of a 14-story building for the VA’s health records system upgrade, Justin D faced significant challenges, including redesigning power distribution and handling relentless contractor turnover. “In the very beginning, the amount of feeders running throughout the basement couldn’t fit into the ceiling, so we collaborated with engineers to slim down the conduits,” Justin explained, highlighting the project’s complexity. Yet, amidst these obstacles, Justin’s pride shines through the positive reputation his team has built with the VA. “I’m most proud of the lasting reputation our team has left; hearing constant praise about how amazing, thorough, efficient, and courteous the guys are is incredibly rewarding,” he reflects. This successful transformation not only advanced the VA’s transition to electronic health records but also cemented a legacy of excellence and efficiency.
